Chilanka is Malayalam handwriting style font. It follows the common style one can see in everyday handwriting of Malayalam. It has a comprehensive Malayalam glyph set that contains most of the unique Malayalam conjuncts.
Chilanka means "anklet" in Malayalam. This is the first typeface I designed. This is not based on my handwriting or anybody's handwriting. The style is based on observation of beautiful handwriting styles observed across Kerala. When I started the project, a comic style font was the intention. However, once released, it became very popular and used for implying friendliness, nostalgia, warm relation and intimacy. Rarely it is used for comic purposes. The terminals are rounded and soft. Glyphs have mono linear outlines imitating a felt tip pen.

I used Inkscape to draw the svgs, fontforge to import the svg and convert into a font format. Chilanka follows traditional Malayalam script with many conjuncts and vowel joined forms.
Latin and other languages
Chilanka also has Latin support. The Latin glyphs are designed by following the Malayalam design. Hence, they will have high descent values, even if unused. The modernfontstacks project (System font stack CSS organized by typeface classification for every modern OS) recommends Chilanka in the font fallback for handwriting style fonts.
